In a region known for its fertile soil, it’s no surprise that the friendly townships that make up our region are full of makers and growers all trying their hand at something uniquely Tasmanian. Here you’ll come across notorious gin and whisky makers, architectural delights, award-winning cheese artisans, bygone steam trains and even the odd fairy penguin that likes to say hello.

Below we’ve listed a few of our favourite local experiences, perfect if you’re craving cultural emersion or adventure during your stay with us.

Gleneagle has much to offer but if your staying a little longer than two nights then here are some picks of the region.

 
    • Cocoon Designs is a gorgeous little shop situated in the township of Penguin, a 10 minute drive from Gleneagle. At Cocoon you’ll find carefully selected vintage and antique pieces, contemporary furniture, art, lighting, rugs and accessories.

    • Slowly Studio is a beautiful minimalist studio in Penguin with a thoughtfully curated range of ethical and mindful retail labels. Any item from here is sure to be a great wardrobe addition!

    • Lyn’s Antiques, Penguin - Where you will find an exciting range of furniture, glassware and collectables as well ass locally made Gollies and dolls.

    • Ghost Rock Winery is the perfect place to spend an afternoon in the sunshine. Their Cellar Door & Eatery offers wine tastings, wine sales and wholesome lunches featuring local Tasmanian produce.

    • Eastford Creek Vineyard

      A family owned business located at Sassafras featuring premium wines and cellar door sales.

    • If you’re after a bit of variety close by head to Penguin Beer & Co locally brewed beers and dining six days per week, overlooking the beautiful foreshore with live music and entertainment.

    • Buttons Brewing is the perfect stop for a cold brew and a great pub feed. A family-owned Brewery producing small-batch beers for the people of Tasmania’s North West coast. Established in 2017, it all began with a young man’s passion for agriculture and beer.

    • If you’re after a taste of award-winning whiskey look no further than Hellyers Road Distillery. Enjoy a tipple from one of a few Australian distilleries that still craft single malt whiskies from their own brew from barrel to bottle.

    • Gin drinkers will enjoy a trip to Southern Wild Distillery in Devonport. Makers of the brand Dasher+Fisher, Southern Wild Distillery specialises in gins that speak true to the place brand of Tasmania with beauty and untouched purity.

  • If you love shredding a few trails while on holiday you’ll be pleased with the options on the North West.

    • If you’re after a quick ride near Gleneagle then the Dial Range trails are for you. With a mix of sweet single track, long gravel grinds, riverside trails and stunning clifftop views it has a lot to offer. A ride/bushwalk to Mt Duncan from Gleneagle takes around two hours to summit for spectacular views of the North West Coast.

    • If you’re just after some practice on Ironcliffe Road in Penguin - Located just 2km from the township of Penguin is Penguin’s Mountain Bike Park. The park features more than 6km of XC single trails with the centre of the old speedway featuring jumps, wall rides and a smaller skills park.  The park is suitable for riders of all levels and is an ideal area to progress from a fresh beginner to a more seasoned rider. 

    • Only one hour and twenty minutes drive the iconic Cradle Mountain should be at the top of your list. Here there are options for short enchanted walks or multi-day hikes! Be sure to check the weather report before heading out and to have appropriate gear if you are taking on a long walk.

    • Looking for something close by? The neighboring Dial Ranges has more than 50km of trail, with opportunities for short walks or longer treks, depending on bushwalking experience. Short walks include Ferndene, Tall Trees, Mount Montgomery, Leven River, Mount Gnomon and the highest peak Mt Duncan at 681m with spectacular views of the Coast and hinterland. If you chose the beautiful Mt Duncan walk from Gleneagle then allow five-six hour return hike.

    • If you like to take in the view, head to Valentines Peak (Alt. 1107 meters). A one-hour drive southwest, spectacular 360-degree views of the hinterlands and the West Coast.

    • Chase waterfalls at Winterbrook Falls and Black Bluff. Located in Nietta this bushwalk will take you through dense rainforest, comprising of King Billy pines over 2000 years old, to Winterbrook Falls cascading 200m off Black Bluff to the rainforest below. The falls are spectacular after heavy rain and when snows are melting, but are hardly visible during hot summer weather. This does not reduce their appeal, as the walking is attractive all year round. The return walk, with a lunch stop, takes between four and five hours.

    • For a bit of everything, you can explore the Leven Canyon. This spectacular 250m deep ravine is only 43km south of Riana and is a must-see for any visitor. From a well-equipped picnic area, follow the rainforest walk to the cliff-face viewing platform this walk has everything for those that simply want to marvel at the breathtaking scenery.

    • For the experienced Bushwalkers, you may want to take on the 80km Dial Range track from Penguin. This trail heads inland from the coast to the world-famous Cradle Mountain. Some sections make for a pleasant stroll, while others provide a definite bushwalking challenge. The complete walk takes six days, but access roads mean that sections can be done as day or overnight trips.

  • Stanley is just one hour and twenty minutes drive with great food and scenery both at destination and along the way. Wynyard and Boat Harbor are worth a visit off the main road. Blue Hills Honey is another great place to visit as well.

    From Gleneagle you can also take a journey to Waratah and return via the scenic Hellyer Gorge.

    Sheffield, the town of murals, has much to offer and only a picturesque fifty minute drive with many return route options.

  • Wander through a gallery

    Cocoon exhibits a variety of exceptional, functional home and gift wares produced by local craftsmen from around the area.

  • Target Golf

    If you’d like to practice your golf swing and win prizes for hitting targets then this activity is for you! Located on Wilmot Road, Forth (2km from the centre of Forth) this driving range is open on public holidays and weekends from 10 am.

  • Turners Berry Patch

    Sometimes it’s nice to simply pick your own produce! At Turner’s Berry Patch you can do just that, pick ripe strawberries or raspberries or enjoy a zesty berry ice cream (there are also pre-picked punnets available if you’d like something to grab and run!). Their quaint café serves lunches, morning and afternoon teas which are all lovingly home-made by their chef.

  • Admire the big penguin

    You can’t visit the northwest of Tasmania without saying hello to The Big Penguin! Standing a proud 3 metres tall on the foreshore of penguin, this was erected to commemorate the town’s centenary in 1975.

    The Big Penguin has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Tasmania.

  • Take on the heritage trail

    The little town of nearby Penguin is a treasure-trove of history and mystery and well worth the stroll. The main street is located adjacent to the beachfront looking north across Bass Strait, yet at the foothills of rich North West farmlands and the Dial Ranges from which Mount Montgomery looms behind, this township exudes a sense of peacefulness and tranquility. Find your own way around Penguin at your own pace by following the trail via North West Tasmania’s website.

  • Explore a cave!

    Gunns Plains Caves offers one of the best examples of its type in Tasmania. The cave is home to some of the largest limestone shawl formations in the Southern Hemisphere and features an underground stream and glow-worm display.

    Guided tours take approximately 1 hour and are conducted daily at 10.00 am, 11.00 am 12.00 noon, 1.30 pm, 2.30 pm, and 3.30 pm.
